In the world of precision machining, EDM, or Electrical Discharge Machining, stands out as a special method. It doesn't cut in the traditional sense. Instead, it removes metal with electrical sparks. This only works on conductive materials like steel, copper, and titanium.

EDM is known for producing very precise and detailed parts. It's commonly used in aerospace, toolmaking, and electronics. But what many don't realize is that EDM isn't just one type of machine. There are several kinds, each built for different roles.


Wire EDM

One method uses a very thin wire to guide the cut. It's extremely accurate and works well for producing sharp corners and fine outlines. This approach is great for hard materials and is often used to shape tools or small components. However, it's mostly suited for designs where the wire can move all the way through the material.


Die Sink EDM

Another method doesn't use a wire at all. Instead, it forms shapes by pressing an electrode into the workpiece. This approach is especially useful when creating cavities or internal features that don't go through the entire part. You'll find it used in fields where complex 3D forms are common.


EDM Drilling

The third method focuses on tiny, deep holes. It uses a rotating tube combined with fluid to erode the metal by spark discharge. This is helpful when working with materials that are too hard for regular drills. It's also often used as a preparation step for other processes.


Which One Fits Your Work

Each of these methods has its own strength. They're not interchangeable, and one type doesn't cover all situations. The right choice depends on what kind of part you're making and what you need the machine to do.
